Solve The Problem In Front Of You

Focusing on what is in front of you can be the most productive thing you do. From oldmantravel’s Flickr photostream.

Sometimes all you can do in life is solve the problem in front of you. This helps to clear the decks if there is a pipeline of work to get done and it gets difficult sorting through everything. The nature of work in the new economy creates an otherwise overwhelming feeling.

When I feel this way, I try and focus all of my energies on what is before me. That client issue on a Tuesday afternoon is what is next. Nothing else matters. Get through that and something gets released and a bit more clarity and control are the rewards. It is very empowering.

We have the big decisions to make, but the mundane everyday work can make a lot of sense and create great liberation from the tyranny of what is continually pulling at us.

Maybe the next thing is to create a ZeroInbox. Or it is to call a client you have not talked to in a while. Regardless, solve what is in front of you and drive it to complete conclusion. Do enough of this and the accumulation of accomplishments either opens doors or grows your opportunities.

What is the next thing for you?
