Getting Your Mind Focused

focusing your mind for action

It’s Monday and that rest from the weekend is hard to transition from. When there are urgencies ahead, it is hard many times to slot in and get focused.

The tyranny of email and catching up with others makes it harder to get going on the important work. Time is ticking relentlessly as well.

I think a lot about productivity and getting things done. Sure, I have tested systems and incorporate streamlined approaches where I can.

But I still have to fit my own desire to procrastinate. It’s always there, as I am sure it is there for everyone on this planet.

But I have found a nice way to get my mind focused that might help you as well.

It comes in the form of ritual. This may sound like some kind of liturgical practice, but I am referring to a repeated practice that sets the tone for work.

I use such practices all the time and you may as well. When I feel stressed, I go for a run or a walk. When I want to wind down, I may drink some hot tea.

When I need to get going with my mind and stay focused, I like to write. It helps me get the cobwebs out and relaxes me into productivity.

I could be writing on my blog here or adding chapters to books I am working on.

Regardless of the medium, the work helps me build momentum and stay focused on what needs to be done. Sure, I use techniques like staying in full screen mode on my Mac and playing background music. I think you have to find what works for you.

But what I discover is that I am ready for action at the end of this activity and the ritual gets me ready for the other urgent demands of the day and week.

It’s the beginning of the week. I hope this helps you get going and getting your mind focused as well.

What ritual can you incorporate for yourself as an anchor?
