Keep Information Flowing

broken link in communication
Don’t be the broken link in communications. From Brian Smithson’s Flickr photostream.

Do you remember playing hot potato as a kid? We passed the potato (or other object) around a group and avoided getting caught holding it at the wrong time.

When I think about how my clients have to get through their weeks, they are playing that game of hot potato. They are business leaders, and they have to move information. If they sit on a request, then the information stops flowing.

And much of our value is to keep the chain going. We have to look at our inputs and make a decision on what needs to happen next. If we bottleneck the process, then those that depend on our insights have to wait. Or the problems we are trying to solve together can suffer from lack of timely response.

Imagine if you keep information flowing quickly, efficiently and consistently. Deals get done. Projects get completed. Your influence rises.

Much of the closure that happens is from the mere fact that you keep information moving to the next steps.

If you are finding you have bottlenecks, then learning new habits and making yourself more efficient goes a long way towards increasing your value to others in this connected economy. People want to come through you rather than go around you.

How can you be more efficient with keeping information flowing for your team, clients and partners? What would that mean to you personally?
