Motivated to Write

When I write, I’m terrified. I want to be able to say something new. I want to say it in an entertaining way. I want to be scared to hit publish. (If I’m not scared to write it, nobody will be scared – or even shocked – to read it.) ~ James Altucher

I downloaded a fun read while drinking some wine tonight, The Miracle Morning for Writers. That was a quote from James Altucher who I like to keep up with. He puts a lot of thought, transparency and humanity into his writing.

I saw that he has over 2,500 articles written on his site as of today.

I have written over 1,700 articles on my site at DonDalrymple.com over the last 10+ years. I want to push the envelope and continue to write with exploration, passion and insightfulness.

I also thought about pushing the envelope and making sure I am always growing. I guess I naturally live in that tension. I’m not a naturally content person. I like finding out what I am made out of as well as what other people are made of. I like living at that tension point that has continual challenge. It’s where I feel natural and comfortable. I’m not a great status quo guy.

Today, I was in a conversation with an excellent articulator who had a similar background as me with engineering and problem solving. I think we find the business world and navigating the ambiguity as a challenge that is both fun and stimulating. One thing I walked away from the conversation with was the reminder that words mattered. How things are said and how impactful the words are to the recipient makes all the difference between action, buy-in and influence.

Writing gives me a lot of that creative space to play, think and explore. I think it’s great for anyone who wants to keep growing, put themselves out there and examine what they are learning. Ultimately, it’s a form of leadership and personal growth that never ends.

I’ll keep seeking to live out loud and keep my thoughts pushing forward. After all, if you’re not growing, you’re dying.

Have you created or would like to create a writing habit?
