Trying To Be Something You’re Not

“Trying to be something that you’re not gets you out of your comfort zone,” Duncan said then. “I’m not that guy. I did a little bit of that. I’ve done my share of it, but I’m just not that guy. I don’t think of myself in that respect. I love playing basketball and that’s what I want to do. I don’t need the extra stuff.” ~ Tim Duncan

Tim Duncan retired from 19 seasons in the NBA today. What an incredible, understated, dominant and consistent player he was.

If you click on the link above you find the ripple effect of players, coaches and staff that owe a lot to Duncan for his performance, leadership and statesmanship. He carried a franchise and a league.

Ironically, he influenced less with outspokenness and much more with example, consistency and steadiness.

I love his leadership style and I resonate with it.

We get presented a false positive of many other types of very talented but loud personalities. The underlying message is that success requires brashness.

I think Tim Duncan shows us what I have witnessed in the business world for success over many years:

  1. Be who you are. Much easier than trying something different.
  2. Stay consistent. Good things happen.
  3. Stay consistent on who you are and the strengths you have. Most everything else is noise and does not matter.

Do you have a lot of extra stuff going on that doesn’t matter or pay off? Maybe it’s similar to what you see in others. But it’s not you.

Imagine how much more efficient and powerful you can be in your life and business if you really understood what Tim Duncan knew about himself.  You can focus on relaxing and being the best you that you can be. Life becomes much less stressful and wasteful.

Kudos to the best power forward the NBA has seen to date. He reminds us of what leadership and success look like from staying tuned in and congruent.
