I have not found a better process than what John Maxwell described to prepare people to lead:
I do it.
– John C. Maxwell, The 360 Degree Leader: Developing Your Influence from Anywhere in the Organization
I do it and you watch.
You do it and I watch.
You do it.
You do it and someone else watches.”
The handoff process is vulnerable to mishaps, missed expectations and missed results. So, when there needs to be someone who does what you do, slow it down and don’t skip the steps in this process. We can always assume there’s miscommunication happening between two people, especially when there is complexity involved.
Start with mastering a process yourself. Know it well. Then you can manage the handoff carefully after having worked through all the nuances.
When you finally watch someone else doing the process you want to handoff, you will likely see misinterpretations or holes in the execution. That’s an opportunity to improve communications or improve the process itself.
