Which is better to get things done, analysis or action?
Not everyone is analytical. For those that are, what if you spend most of your time breaking down problems, looking at options, creating plans and thinking for weeks before you act?
If your job is to manage all the risk out of known options, then you are in a wonderful fit of a job. Your organization needs you to bring all the analysis to conclude where the opportunities and risks lie.
However, if you are leading, especially where others are depending on your direction and clarity, then speed becomes a powerful factor to move opportunities forward.
Nobody Changed the World By Playing it Safe
Do you know anyone that actually has changed the world playing it safe? What we get to enjoy and experience was created by someone that once took a courageous action.
They were not maintainers, they chose to innovate.
One of the truths I have found working with CEO’s is that action reveals options that analysis never will.
When you move to action, you change the perspective and reality of your circumstances. You see things you would not otherwise have had access to without options.
Can you sell into a new market? How about finding a hunter and experiment for 90 days. You will learn what the obstacles and wins look like and if it’s worth investing more.
Should you build a new product? How about creating a prototype through consulting services and seeing if customers even value the offering. Go manual before automating.
The great thing about action is that you can push in the direction you want right now. You will get more clarity.
What’s one thing you want right now?
What’s one small step in that direction you can take?
Thanks Don,
I always appreciate your insights.
