Hiked from Aspen to Crested Butte for Sonya’s birthday! Partied with friends for 3 days in Crested Butte. So fun. |
That pic above was so rewarding. Hiking up to that point was grueling from Aspen and the climb took the wind out of me and pushed my legs to lots of pain. But the view was ridiculously Narnia-like. I would highly recommend the Maroon Bells visit and the 11 mile hike over to Crested Butte.
We are still pushing. I like the pain and focus. It makes me stronger and it keeps me grounded on what is mattering now. Right now, we just launched our son, Isaac, our second-born, who is attending the University of Hawaii. We were watching videos of when he was 3 and our family felt we were in a surreal place. It connects the dots. He was that guy. He is that guy today. And we are cheering him on to that man he is becoming.
I have been thinking about time and how we are moving down that current, much like a rushing river, together with our friends and family. Kevin Kelly said, “Don’t bother fighting the old; just build the new.” It’s efficient. It’s a great use of our time and energy to apply this advice. I am trying to do so.
I can’t recreate past memories. I can appreciate them.
I can’t undo costly business decisions. I can keep pushing forward and opening up opportunities.
I can’t make broken friendships work. I can make new, better friends though.
I hope that you are looking forward more than backwards and building the new. It’s a better use of energy. We still have to change the world! Some tips to help you on that journey.
- Tool I am loving. The Snowpeak GigaPower Torch totally rocks! You will love how it gets a fire or barbecue going instantly. I have been using it a lot and the power and convenience make you feel alive. Grill. Sit around fires. They make you slow down with friends and live in the moment. And they think you are so cool with this blowtorch!
- Build habits not goals. I have turned friends back on to Streaks. I am working on streaks for reading, quiet time and thank you’s. Here’s another quote from Kevin Kelly, “Habit is far more dependable than inspiration. Make progress by making habits. Don’t focus on getting into shape. Focus on becoming the kind of person who never misses a workout.” This works. Little things done consistently over a long period of time can move mountains.’
- Simplify software. SaaShop is a marketplace that consolidates your software subscriptions for purchasing and mangement ongoing. I like simpler especially when I’m trying to narrow my focus.
- On a strategic focus. “Writing is a completely bigger impact than speaking. You help more people. You also position better.
If you actually get successful at writing, speaking naturally follows.
People start to invite you to things based on your reputation. You want to be asked. In contrast, you don’t want to have to keep asking. The two starting points are completely different.” Think about how you start, work and are positioned. - Fire yourself. Want more time and health? Build out an org chart on Google Drawings. Put your name in all the boxes of the jobs you are doing. Start hiring to replace what you are doing. You are likely only a few moves away from freedom and results.
