Remove Friction to Enjoy Long-term Consistency

I have struggled with many ways of working out over the years based on changing seasons of life. When I reflect on times where I was consistent in my workouts, it was because I removed friction.

I have a front door with a one mile loop around my neighborhood. My shoes are at the door along with a headlamp ready to go if it’s late.

I buy Vuori shorts and shirts. These are stylish for business meetings in the day and I am ready for a hike, tennis or a random invite to meet a friend for pickleball. My clothes fit multiple occasions and I look forward to wearing my gear.

I throw away equipment that I don’t find pleasure in. I only keep what works well. That way, when I pick up a racquet, a pair of basketball shoes or my day pack, I have a bit of pleasure in the experience. I love my gear and it makes it easy to get right into an activity.

I am not looking for a flash in the pan with passion. I want consistency over a long period of time and doing things well.

I can see results in my body and fitness over months. I can push harder on bigger challenges or matches. I actually get good at something.

The other day, I put up 185 on the bench 3×7 times. That was 4 years of consistency.

I put in between 10K to 15K steps per day.

I am playing solid 4.0 tennis.

All consistency over a period of time and that largely comes from making the small steps easy each day.

Where can you make the steps for a workout easier?
