Don’t Torture Yourself With Work You Hate

I get it. You need to pay the bills. You may know some things because you got a degree in a subject, had your first job pushing the envelope on technical work you dread, or a host of other reasons for being where you are at.

And if you have to drag yourself out of bed facing a project you have to muster up motivation and enthusiasm for, you are in a no-win situation. Doing it for the money is short-lived. Getting burned out is real and makes you pay the piper eventually.

Here are symptoms that tell you that you are torturing yourself:

  • Your procrastinate on starting or ondelivering
  • You lack consistency.
  • Everything feels forced when it is natural for others.
  • You don’t love what you are doing.

Getting to success requires immense consistency. If you lack the motivation and find yourself procrastinating, you can’t get the fruits of mastery. Those who are skilled and masterful enjoy the respective revenue and compound effects.

Skills do take time. You can’t shortcut this. And the discipline required is much easier if you enjoy the work.

You may see people that find the work both enjoyable and natural. It’s because they are built for the work. It is who they are.

It may not be who you are whatsoever. And this is ok.

I’ll tell you a little secret in life that you may have heard – knowing who you are and doing only that will take you very far.

There are many myths out there. And here are some counter truths to help you think about reality and what you have experienced:

  1. You are not good at everything
  2. You should not try to be good at everything
  3. Everyone is not a leader
  4. Leaders are born, not made
  5. Many more people are supporters not leaders
  6. You should live in that space that is easy and natural, not forced.
  7. Ignore your parents and friends advice. They don’t live your life. You do.

The sooner you can tap into that alignment of doing what is natural to who you are, the sooner you can be happy and build on something long-term and meaningful.

Are you happy? Why or why not?
